Day 4: TBT / Own the Moment – Mary Lou Retton (1984)

Thirty-two years ago, Mary Lou Retton became the first American woman ever to win an individual all-around OGM in gymnastics.

Five weeks earlier, Retton had undergone knee surgery to correct an injury sustained while she was performing a floor routine at a local gym. Although many questioned her ability to compete, she silenced all doubt by scoring perfect tens on her final two events in the all-around competition – floor exercise and vault – en route to winning her historic gold medal by five one-hundredths of a point.
