Since tonight is the first night of senior-level competition at the 2017 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, it seemed like an appropriate time to turn back the clock a couple of decades to revisit Michelle Kwan’s free skate from the 1998 U.S. National Championships. The performance earned her an unprecedented eight (out of a possible nine) perfect 6.0s for artistic impression (to go along with the seven she received for her short program) en route to her second national title.
The same programs would later earn her an Olympic silver medal and the second world championship of her career.
Although she went on to win seven additional national titles (and three world titles) over the next seven years, this particular performance remains one of the greatest, most beloved, and most iconic of her career.
